Nell’ambito del programma Science with and for Society (sul canale Youtube 5 brevi presentazioni che lo descrivono) il 14 maggio 2014 si terrà a Bruxelles un brokerage event con incontri bilaterali pre-organizzati al fine di facilitare la creazione di partenariati e collaborazioni internazionali. La partecipazione al brokerage event è gratuita, previa registrazione sul sito ufficiale dell’evento.

The main objective of the Science with and for Society networking event is to provide first-hand information by the European Commission officials about the first Horizon 2020 Science with and for Society 2014-2015 calls, launched on the 11th December 2013, and to bring all stakeholders together (universities, research institutions, civil society organisations, SMEs, public bodies, Science Centres etc.), in order to meet potential coordinators and partners in a fruitful networking environment.In particular, at the Science with and for Society information event, participants will receive information on the following research areas:

  • Making science education and careers attractive for young people (SEAC*);
  • Promoting gender equality in research and innovation (GERI*);
  • Integrating society in science and innovation (ISSI*);
  • Developing governance for the advancement of responsible research and innovation (GARRI*)

Lo Sportello Ricerca europea di Sardegna Ricerche ha reso note le date del mese di maggio in cui sarà possibile usufruire dell’assistenza tecnica sulla programmazione europea. Gli appuntamenti seguiranno il seguente calendario:

It’s my great pleasure to report to you the 3rd International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology (iCBEB 2014, Beijing, China, on September 19-21). iCBEB Conference provides a great opportunity to meet, into an international contest, the most recent advances in some important fields like biomedical engineering, biomaterials, bioinformatics and computational biology, biomedical imaging and signal processing, biomechanical engineering and biotechnology. Conference proceedings will be published by Journal-Bio-Medical Materials and Engineering (indexed by SCI Expanded/EI Compendex/Scopus) and you can find the 2013 conference proceedings published in Bio-Medical Materials and Engineering.

Aprirà il 7 giugno la  Mostra Internazionale di Architettura a Venezia. La Biennale internazionale, giunta alla 14 edizione, si concentrerà sulla storia e sull’evoluzione delle architetture degli ultimi 100 anni. Da poco è diventata operativa la versione 4.0 di MetaboAnalyst, una suite, disponibile on line, per l’analisi dati in metabolomica. Molto interessante il modulo di analisi dei pathway che include il calcolo delle reti metaboliche attivate caratterizzandole con due misure di centralità e modularità:Schermata 2013-04-17 a 12.37.42

The metabolism can be represented as a complex system characterized by a high variability of components with properties related to their aggregation and self-organizing capabilities. The elements of metabolism are molecules of various kinds and structural properties, and such variability is observed at different metabolic scales going from metabolites to metabolic profiles via chemical reactions and metabolic pathways, as well as under static or dynamic aspects.  The data analysis and interpretation approaches can give insights into exciting applications of the “metabolome” studies in human health, the so-called “Metabolomics”, but the “Data Analysis” sentence should be interoperated as the global ensemble  of techniques devoted to the mining of information from experimental measurements. Goals for Data Analysis applied to Metabolomics can be represented in three different classes:

  • Exploration
  • Classification
  • Prediction
Exploration of data can give answers to the questions about the structures in my data, in order to define the analytical sources of  similarity and dissimiliraty properties between samples and sample aggregates, using supplemental information as meta data and covariates to correct trends of no interest in our data in order to reduce the “noise” and increase the “signal”, the information. Classification can quantify the  dissimilarities/similarities between groups in order to highlight the significant changes in metabolic samples properties. Finally, Prediction can answer to the question: “What is related or predictive of my variables of interest?”
All these steps in metabolomics data analysis have received contribution from several disciplines and now we must discuss about the Computational Metabolomics as the complete technique for the physical and mathematical modeling of biomedical properties of living systems.
In order to understand the real importance of Computational Metabolomics and to understand the need to a global training of involved researchers I would like to mention in this article:

The book presents a variety of different computational approaches to describe the variability in metabolic systems, and the Web Site of MetaboAnalyst2.0  is a comprehensive tool suite for the metabolomics data analysis. . MetaboAnalyst is supported by THE METABOLOMICS INNOVATION CENTRE (TMIC), a Genome Canada-funded core facility realized by the efforts of several Metabolomics researchers, like  Jianguo Xia (our Jeff), David Wishart and Mandal, Sinelnikov, Broadhurst, Psychogios, Young et al. in the next articles I will explain to you some important aspects of the theoretical approaches in Computational Metabolomics using the book of Prof. Semmar (and other references) and some practices with the tools of  MetaboAnalyst.

Il Consiglio di Facoltà ha appena deliberato l’istituzione di un appello ad aprile, riservato esclusivamente agli studenti fuori corso.  In via straordinaria, per il mese di aprile, gli studenti fuori corso appartenenti al corso di laurea in Scienze Politiche, Scienze dell’Amministrazione Pubblica, Scienze dell’Amministrazione e Governance e Sistema Globale potranno sostenere l’esame di Diritto dell’Unione europea o, rispettivamente, di Concorrenza e aiuti di Stato e Diritto dei servizi nell’Unione europea, in data 14 aprile, ore 14.00 in aula CM-3 (presso la Clinica Aresu). Gli studenti si iscriveranno tramite una mail indirizzata a p.piroddi@unica.it.
