Well this week we continued with our look at comparatives by also looking at sayoing two things are the same or different!
NOT AS ……. AS AS…..AS
Mike isn’t as old as John. This hotel is as expensive as the one in Oxford Street.
DIFFERENT FROM
He’s different from his brother
Your dress is different from mine.
THE SAME AS/SIMILAR TO
She’s exactly the same as her sister.
Your dress is similar to mine.
Idiomatic phrases: As good as gold; as old as the hills; as quiet as a mouse! As fresh as a daisy! As cute as a button! As cool as a cucumber! As quick as lightning! As wise as an owl! As thick as two short planks!
Then we also looked at the future used for plans and predictions.
FUTURE PLANS (!)
We use am/is/are going to + infinitive and the PRESENT CONTINOUS to talk about plans in the future.
We are going to watch TV this evening!
Are you going to eat all that chocolate?
I’m not going to drink any wine at the party tonight!
(I decided to do something) I’m going to buy a new car! FUTURE (I do it)

You use the PRESENT CONTINUOUS for arrangements, dates, appointments etc.

I’m playing tennis at 3pm on Monday. (I’m going to play….
I’m meeting John on Tuesday. (I’m going to meet…

NB It’s not wrong to use the “going to” form in all these sentences but the PRESENT CONTINUOUS is more common!
Also with “go” and “come” we often prefer NOT to use the “going to “ form:
(I’m going to go to London this summer) I’m going to London this summer!
(They’re going to come to my party at the weekend ) becomes
They’re coming to my party at the weekend.
Remember that the same rules apply for STATIVE verbs which are NOT used in the present continuous.
Remember “will” is used for less definite things – predictions anout what will happen and if you add “maybe/possibly” it becomes even less definite.
NOT DEFINITE (No arrangements) ‘ll/will
Maybe I’ll take a postgraduate degree course.
INTENTIONS be going to
I’m going to take a postgraduate course.
DEFINITE Arrangements made Present Continuous
I’m taking a postgraduate course in September.
Predictions
No evidence – ‘ll/will
It’ll rain tomorrow. (weather forecast on TV)
Evidence now – be going to
Look at those black clouds!! It’s going to rain!
Then we looked at indirect questions- a way of sounding more polite!
INDIRECT QUESTIONS
USE INDIRECT QUESTIONS TO SOUND POLITE
BEGIN WITH AN INTRODUCTION:
Do you know ,,,,,,?
Can you tell me……..?
Could you tell me…..?
Do you think you could tell me…..?
I wonder……….
I’d like to know………
NOTE ; in the second part we use an affirmative NOT a question,
WHAT TIME DOES THE TRAIN LEAVE? The train leaves
Can you tell me what time the train leaves? NOT
CAN YOU TELL ME What time does the train arrive? NO!
YES/NO QUESTION use IF /WHETHER
Can I book a double room?
I’D LIKE TO KNOW WHETHER /IF I CAN BOOK A DOUBLE ROOM?
Do you like pizza?
I wonder if you like pizza.
We also looked at the verb “sound” in the meaning of “seems!”
“Sounds interesting/ boring!!!”
