Last week we started looking at the Present perfect Continuous , here’s the grammar!
PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS
FORM

FOR + TIME EXPRESSION = LENGTH OF TIME
I’VE BEEN STUDYING ENGLISH FOR 10 YEARS/FOR A LONG TIME/ FOR AGES
SINCE + TIME EXPRESSION = STARTING POINT
I’VE BEEN LIVING HERE SINCE SEPTEMBER/2000/I WAS A BOY.
QUESTIONS WITH “how long,,,,”?
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WAITING?
Do not use the Present perfect continuous with stative verbs.
I’ve been here since January
I’ve been being here since January. NO!!!!!

Typical expressions with the Present perfect Continuous
How long have you been waiting/ living here/ working here/ doing that?
Have you been waiting/ living here/ working here/ doing that long?
What have you been doing?
I’ve been studying/ waiting/ living here/ working here/ doing this since 9 o’clock/ last week/last month/since last year.
Then we had a look at the present tense used in the future!
If clauses and present tense 1st conditional
If + present tense , future
Future if + present tense
If it rains, we’ll stay at home.
If I don’t pass the exam, I’ll be very unhappy.
I’ll be very unhappy if I don’t pass the exam
We’ll stay at home if it rains.
He won’t come to the party if he doesn’t feel well!
also when/before/after/until/as soon as/once
in phrases referring to the future use the Present Simple
When I arrive, I’ll phone you.
Before she leaves, she’ll lock all the doors.
I’ll call you as soon as/after I get to the hotel.
I won’t call you until I get to the hotel.
REMEMBER
Use the PRESENT PERFECT instead of the PRESENT if you want to emphasize that the action has finished!
Once I’VE GOT my degree, I’ll travel the world!
As soon as YOU’VE PAID the bill, we’ll send the order!
As regards vocab. we’ve been looking at PHRASAL VERBS with the verb “LIVE”
live out of a suitcase, live through; live on; live up to, live for; live off,
We also had a look at ” containers” – packet, box, bottle, carton, tin, can
FUNCTIONAL ENGLISH
Giving advice!!!
For example :SHOULD
To ask for and give advice
What should I do?
You should take an aspirin.
You shouldn’t eat too much chocolate.
I don’t think you should eat so much chocolate.
NB the form “if I were you, I’d…..”
If I were you, I’d buy a new car.
Also WHY DON’T YOU….
Why don’t you go on a diet?!
All these expressions are followed by the verb in the BASE FORM
eg. You should stop smoking!
If I were you I’d stop smoking!
Why don’t you stop smoking?
If you use the form :
HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT…..then the verb is in the ING form
Have you though about going on a diet?
