Simone Caschili

Environmental Engineer, he earned his PhD in Ingegneria del Territorio (Land Engineering and Urban Planning) at the University of Cagliari, School of Engineering and Architecture (Italy) in 2010. His thesis (Complex Networks and Spatial Analysis: an Integrated Approach for Community Detection) explores the linkages between Complex Network Theory and Spatial Planning proposing a contribution to the issue of “regionalization”.

His research interests are the modelling of urban and regional systems as complex networks, the inclusion of time-space features in network modelling and policy evaluation for planning in both urban and environmental governance. He developed the GIS tool ComplexNetGIS, an ArcGIS® integrated tool. It provides several network functions and indices taken from Complex Network Theory and transport analysis. Since 2007 he has been Teaching Assistant for the courses of Spatial Planning at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Cagliari, where he is lecturer of classes and labs for students at both the graduate and the undergraduate level as well as thesis supervisor.

In the past, he worked both for public bodies and for private companies on the following areas: urban and regional planning, spatial planning, master plan Implementation, cartography, GIS, energy planning policy. He is currently consultant for the Italian National Agency of Environment Member of the project SCUS-SPAC (Land use and Landscape policies project) at the Urban Planning Office of the Autonomous Administration of Sardinia (IT) for the application of Strategic Environmental Assessment (European SEA Directive 2001/42/EC) and sustainability to landscape planning, historical and environmental preservation. He is also one of the energy plan implementation team members for the activities connected to the development of territorial planning and energy policies in the province of Ogliastra (IT). He has delivered presentations at various international conferences and has published approximately 20 papers, mostly co-authored, mainly on Complex Network Theory applied to regional planning and on accessibility Indicators.
