Hello there,

Apologies for my absence but now we’re back in business and on the home run!

Last week we started looking at the Present perfect Continuous , here’s the grammar!

PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS

FORM

  S. + Aux have+ been V +ing
AFFIRMATIVE I’VE BEENHe’s been WAITING FOR TWO HOURS
NEGATIVE I HAVEN’T BEEN LIVING HERE LONG.
QUESTION HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN STUDYING ENGLISH?

I’ve lived/I’ve been/I’ve seen

USE

ACTIONS STARTED IN THE PAST WHICH CONTINUE

I’VE BEEN LIVING HERE FOR 10 YEARS. (I STILL LIVE HERE)

FOR  + TIME EXPRESSION = LENGTH OF TIME

I’VE BEEN STUDYING ENGLISH FOR 10 YEARS/FOR A LONG TIME/ FOR AGES

SINCE + TIME EXPRESSION = STARTING POINT

I’VE BEEN LIVING HERE SINCE SEPTEMBER/2000/I WAS A BOY.

QUESTIONS WITH “how long,,,,”?

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WAITING?

Do not use the Present perfect continuous with stative verbs.

I’ve been here since January

I’ve been being here since January. NO!!!!!

I’ve liked that song for ages!!! ok

Typical expressions with the Present perfect Continuous

How long have you been waiting/ living here/ working here/ doing that?

Have you been waiting/ living here/ working here/ doing that long?

What have you been doing?

I’ve been studying/ waiting/ living here/ working here/ doing this since 9 o’clock/ last week/last month/since last year.

Then we had a look at the present tense used in the future!

If clauses and present tense 1st conditional

If + present tense , future

Future if + present tense

If it rains, we’ll stay at home.

If I don’t pass the exam, I’ll be very unhappy.

I’ll be very unhappy if I don’t pass the exam

We’ll stay at home if it rains.

He won’t come to the party if he doesn’t feel well!

also when/before/after/until/as soon as/once

in phrases referring to the future use the Present Simple

When I arrive, I’ll phone you.

Before she leaves, she’ll lock all the doors.

I’ll call you as soon as/after I get to the hotel.

I won’t call you until I get to the hotel.

REMEMBER

Use the PRESENT PERFECT instead of the PRESENT if you want to emphasize that the action has finished!

Once I’VE GOT my degree, I’ll travel the world!

As soon as YOU’VE PAID the bill, we’ll send the order!

As regards vocab. we’ve been looking at PHRASAL VERBS with the verb “LIVE”

live out of a suitcase, live through; live on; live up to, live for; live off,

We also had a look at ” containers” – packet, box, bottle, carton, tin, can

FUNCTIONAL ENGLISH

Giving advice!!!

For example :SHOULD

To ask for and give advice

What should I do?

You should take an aspirin.

You shouldn’t eat too much chocolate.

I don’t think you should eat so much chocolate.

NB the form “if I were you, I’d…..”

If I were you, I’d buy a new car.

Also  WHY  DON’T YOU….

Why don’t you go on a diet?!

All these expressions are followed by the verb in the BASE FORM
eg. You should                         stop smoking!

If I were you I’d                 stop smoking!

Why don’t you                       stop smoking?

If you use the form :

HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT…..then the verb is in the ING form

Have you though about going on a diet?

ANSWERS!

Of course, you’re right!

Great/good idea!

Oh no, I couldn’t!!!

Hello everybody!

Welcome back! Sorry for my absence over the hols but all those Easter eggs!!!

Anyway last week we completed our last module about Sennifer’s tomb- taking a look mainly at vocab!

We’ve now started on revision – beginning with Vermeer!

Remember that for the written test the worksheets are all valid – for the oral you need to be able to talk about the article in the book!

so as regards Vermeer for the oral you need to be able to:

1) describe the painting –

2) talk about the symbolism

Remember if you have any questions don’t hesitate!

      See you on Tuesday!

Hello there everyone!

Well this week we continued with our look at comparatives by also looking at sayoing two things are the same or different!

NOT AS ……. AS                                       AS…..AS

Mike isn’t as old as John.                       This hotel is as expensive as the                                                                     one in Oxford Street.

DIFFERENT FROM

   He’s different from his brother

Your dress is different from mine.

 THE SAME AS/SIMILAR TO

She’s exactly the same as her sister.

Your dress is similar to mine.

Idiomatic phrases: As good as gold; as old as the hills; as quiet as a mouse! As fresh as a daisy! As cute as a button! As cool as a cucumber! As quick as lightning! As wise as an owl! As thick as two short planks!

Then we also looked at the future used for plans and predictions.

FUTURE PLANS (!)

We use am/is/are going to + infinitive and the PRESENT CONTINOUS to talk about  plans in the future.

We are going to watch TV this evening!

Are you going to eat all that chocolate?

I’m not going to drink any wine at the party tonight!

(I decided to do something)                    I’m going to buy a new car!              FUTURE (I do it)

—————————————————————————————————————————-

You use the PRESENT CONTINUOUS for arrangements, dates, appointments etc.

MY DIARYMONDAY  TENNIS 3PMTUESDAY   MEETING WITH JOHN

WEDNESDAY LUNCH WITH SUE

I’m playing tennis at 3pm on Monday.   (I’m going to play….

I’m meeting John on Tuesday.                  (I’m going to meet…

I’m having lunch with Sue on Wednesday.   (I’m going to have….)

NB It’s not wrong to use the “going to” form in all these sentences but the PRESENT CONTINUOUS is more common!

Also with “go” and “come” we often prefer NOT to use the “going to “ form:

(I’m going to go to London this summer) I’m going to London this summer!

(They’re going to come to my party at the weekend ) becomes

They’re coming to my party at the weekend.

Remember that the same rules apply for STATIVE verbs  which are NOT used in the present continuous.

Remember “will” is used for less definite things – predictions anout what will happen and if you add “maybe/possibly” it becomes even less definite.

NOT DEFINITE    (No arrangements)      ‘ll/will

Maybe I’ll take a postgraduate degree course.

INTENTIONS                                 be going to

I’m going to take a postgraduate course.

DEFINITE      Arrangements made   Present Continuous

I’m taking a postgraduate course in September.

Predictions

No evidence – ‘ll/will

It’ll rain tomorrow. (weather forecast on TV)

Evidence now – be going to

Look at those black clouds!! It’s going to rain!

Then we looked at indirect questions- a way of sounding more polite!

INDIRECT QUESTIONS

USE INDIRECT QUESTIONS TO SOUND POLITE

BEGIN WITH AN INTRODUCTION:

Do you know ,,,,,,?

Can you tell me……..?

Could you tell me…..?

Do you think you could tell me…..?

I wonder……….

I’d like to know………

NOTE ; in the second part we use an affirmative NOT a question,

WHAT TIME DOES THE TRAIN LEAVE?   The train leaves

Can you tell me what time the train leaves? NOT

CAN YOU TELL ME What time does the train arrive?   NO!

YES/NO QUESTION use IF /WHETHER

Can I book a double room?

I’D LIKE TO KNOW        WHETHER /IF                      I CAN BOOK A DOUBLE ROOM?

Do you like pizza?

I wonder if you like pizza.

We also looked at the verb “sound” in the meaning of “seems!”

“Sounds interesting/ boring!!!”

VOCABULARY

holiday words (book, check out of, pack your bags, find your way around etc.)

office supplies ( paperclips, sellotape, etc.)

Hello there,

Well this week we finished our look at Light and Colour in the Museum Environment which was probably one of the most if not the most difficult article to date. Remember that for the written test you will need to know the vocab. that was introduced during the lessons. For the Oral questions will be about the actual article and the Museum photocopy.

We have now started on our last module -The tomb of Sennefer! Hope this is more your cup of tea!!!  We completed database info. about the Block Statue of Sennefer and learned something about you.

Next week please remember that there are NO lessons on Wednesday or Thursday and that after the holidays we start back on Wednesday 27 April . No “Sardinian ” holiday on Thursday either ! Sorry!!! Once we have completesd the last article, the last two weeks of the course are revision and practice!!!

On Tuesday I will confirm the date of the written test for our lucky Istanbul group!!!

      Enjoy your weekend!

Don’t forget to do your homework!
