Education in Italy is compulsory for all children aged six to sixteen. Public schools are run by State and attendance is free of charge, while private schools charge a fee.


Italian education system consists of five levels:

  1. Pre-school education at nursery school: 3-5 years old
  2. Primary school: 6-10 years old
  3. Lower secondary school/first level: 11-13 years old
  4. Upper secondary school/high school: 14-18 years old
  5. University


Children from birth to 3 years old can attend daycare centres but it is not mandatory.
