Education in Italy is compulsory for all children aged six to sixteen. Public schools are run by State and attendance is free of charge, while private schools charge a fee.
Italian education system consists of five levels:
- Pre-school education at nursery school: 3-5 years old
- Primary school: 6-10 years old
- Lower secondary school/first level: 11-13 years old
- Upper secondary school/high school: 14-18 years old
- University
Children from birth to 3 years old can attend daycare centres but it is not mandatory.
