Obiettivi

After attending both the theoretical part and the practical part of the English Language 1 course, students will:
1. Have acquired written and oral linguistic and metalinguistic competence at the B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages;
2. Be able to provide a theoretical and analytical description of English morphology and syntax by means of a structural grammatical approach and the specialised language and terminology of the discipline. Students will be able to define the functions and categories of English grammar from morpheme level to sentence level, and to examine the structure of words, phrases, clauses and sentences. These competences will be acquired in order to study the organisation of the message in the sentence, therefore as a basis for the further development of skills in the fields of translation, interlanguage contact and linguistic and cultural mediation.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE 1
STRUCTURAL GRAMMAR (Theoretical Part) – 20 hours
Theoretical lessons, or English linguistics
1. Introduction to the study of English language and linguistics

5. Sentences and clauses
6. Word formation and spelling

GENERAL ENGLISH B1 LEVEL (Practical Part)
Practical classes, or general English (Esercitazioni)
General English practical classes taught by language teachers. Their objective is acquiring linguistic competence at a B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
The classes will be taught from October to May with no interruption; in January and February, during the exam weeks, they will have a reduced schedule. For the timetable, please visit the faculty website.

Metodi Didattici

Theoretical lectures (20 hours), or English linguistics, and practical classes, or general English (Esercitazioni).
The general English practical classes will be taught both in classrooms and multimedia labs. The lab classes will be an integral part of the entire course and will prepare the students for the final written exam.
Attending lectures and classes is not compulsory but is highly recommended.

Verifica dell'apprendimento

The final exam will consist of a written exam on the general English practical part, followed by an oral exam on the English linguistics theoretical part.

STRUCTURAL GRAMMAR (Theoretical Part)
Theoretical lessons, or English linguistics
The competence in the English linguistics theoretical part will be assessed by means of an oral exam. The exam will test the achievement of the teaching objectives and the learning results as described in this official exam programme. During the oral exam, the students will be able to show that: 1. They have acquired theoretical competence in the discipline, along with its specialised language and terminology; 2. They can apply that theoretical competence to the analysis of compound and complex sentences in English and discuss their morphological and syntactic features.

GENERAL ENGLISH B1 LEVEL (Practical Part)
Practical classes, or general English (Esercitazioni)
The students’ linguistic competence in the general English practical part will be assessed by means of a B1-level written exam in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The exam will consist of three different tests: two in the lab (listening + multiple choice) and one in a classroom (reading comprehension). The lab tests will be aimed at assessing the students’ abilities to understand the language used by both Anglophone native speakers (British, American, Australian, etc.) and ELF (English as a Lingua Franca) speakers. The lab tests will also be aimed at assessing the students’ grammatical and lexical knowledge. The classroom test will assess the students’ skills at reading and writing short texts of various types.
