in the International Workshop of Architectural and Urban Restoration

10-22, September 2007

 

Cagliari and the old city: ancient wounds and a new meaning

 

 

Aims and contents

Actually very often it emerges the presence of gaps in the fabric of the old towns, caused by traumatic interventions. Big and small empty spaces represent the cause of urban disqualification.

The international workshop aims to represent an occasion to think about the unexpressed potentialities of the ancient city of Cagliari (Sardinia, Italy), reflecting about three emblematic cases: S. Francesco cloister in Stampace, the interrupted block of houses between S. Domenico’s church and via S. Giacomo in Villanova and the demolished block between via Fara and via S. Margherita in Stampace. Starting from the deep comprehension of the historical essence of the analysed spaces, the aim is the re-definition of its urban image, testing new project design approaches to the theme of urban rehabilitation.

The workshop will be accompanied by a debate conducted by experts and institutions on restoration and project on the old city.

This initiative will take place in Cagliari, Faculty of Architecture of the University of Cagliari, in the building of the Department of Architecture, in via Corte d’Appello 87.

This call aims at selecting a total of 30 workshop participants, Italian or foreigners holding a university degree in Civil Engineering or Architectural Engineering, Architecture or similar degrees.

While confirming the overall number of hours, organisers reserve the right to alter their allocation to the various activities, the teacher roster and sites of teaching activities.

Official Languages: Italian and English.

Planned activities

The workshop aims to explore the three case-study, to express their architectural value and to delineate their new rule in the valorization of the public space where they are located.

It will run for two weeks an it will be divided in three phases:

· I^ phase_September, 10-13 – It focuses on classroom work, according to the guidelines provided by coordinators, and to the illustration of the morphology of sites, of the history an of the urban and architectural evolution of the cases-study, in relation with the main cultural and practical questions that every group of students will have to confront;

· 2^ phase_September, 14-15 – An International conference will be held, supporting project design activities, with the participation of professors of restoration, project, public officers, freelance professionals.

· 3^ phase_September, 17-21 – It will focus on finalization of the groups’ project work.

The projects will be presented in a public exhibition on September, 22, and then they will be published on a volume.

This call aims at selecting a total of 30 workshop participants, Italian or foreigners holding a university degree in Civil Engineering or Architectural Engineering, Architecture or similar degrees, plus a few selected undergraduates nearing graduation.

The workshop will run for a total of 110 hours, including lessons, conferences, debates, screenings, guided tours, project presentation and discussion, design under the guidance of tutors. Participants will receive an attendance certificate.

Teaching activities will be managed by experts from the Cagliari, Napoli and Chieti Faculty of Architecture.

The workshop will be conducted on a full-day basis: the draft schedule is as follows:

Structuring of the workshop and teaching staff

Workshop participants will be divided into six groups, each with 5 participants. Each group will be led by a project officer assisted by a tutor. These staff members make up the project design staff, which will be present in the classrooms each day of the workshop. General supervision will be provided by the coordinators who, working jointly, will issue guidelines for project work to the project design staff, thus ensuring consideration of a variety of design options.

Guidelines for project development, coordination of the different steps, progress assessment and summary of outputs will be provided by workshop coordinators.

Organisational Structure

Project Coordinators, highly qualified experts with cross-cutting skills in sectors covered by the project: urban and architectural restoration, infrastructure and urban landscaping projects, building renovation and sustainability technologies;

Tutors, freelance professionals with a degree in architecture, in civil engineering or architectural engineering, with experience in the running of teaching workshops at university level or similar workshop activities. Classroom tutors lead workshop activities and support students in project development.

Participation in the workshop/entry requirements

Participation is reserved to 30 graduates in Architecture, Civil Engineering or Architectural Engineering, Conservation of Architectural Heritage, selected on the basis of their CVs and information attached to their application. Applicants are required to send applications and curricula to the workshop’s secretariat by email to: cittastorica07@unica.it, no later than 12.00 hrs of 19 July, 2007.

Each participant is required to bring his/her own notebook PC.

 

Selection

Applicants will be selected by a Commission comprising the workshop coordinators and professors of the University of Cagliari. Suitable applicants will be enrolled in a provisional list pending confirmation of payment of their registration fee (see next para) or notice of their withdrawal.

 

Registration Fee

The registration fee is established at Euro 300.00 (three hundred) and covers participation in all workshop activities, basic information material, a meal per day and of a copy of the volume where the projects drawn up will be published. Information about the accommodation will be sent.
