The University of Cagliari (UNICA)  has supported international education through its International Visiting Professor Program since 2006. The candidate may be an academic scientist (tenure-track or off the tenure-track) or a non-academic scientist ( i.e. industry researcher, well-known architect that can be compared to an academic scientist).

The purpose of this Visiting Professor (VP)  program is

  • to provide opportunities for teaching or lecturing
  • to enhance the teaching or research profile of UNICA especially in a field otherwise not available within the University
  • to start research with UNICA colleagues
  • to start exchange collaborations with other Universities in Europe or outside Europe

Call, eligibility conditions, financial support

For 2010 UNICA appoints visiting fellows through an open call.

Academic scientists (tenure-track position such as Full Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor or off the tenure-track such as Lecturer, Adjunct Professor, Research Professor, Research fellow) or  non-academic scientists ( i.e. industry researcher, well-known architect that can be compared to an academic scientist) may present their candidature to teach or to research at UNICA according to the profiles/projects proposed by UNICA faculties and departments available at http://people.unica.it/visitingprofessor/.

The candidate must not have other teaching/research/collaborative contract with other Italian universities or public administration simultaneously with  his/her appointment at UNICA.

Candidates appointed by previous VP calls for a total of 14 months may apply only for a short visit.

According to the profiles of UNICA bodies, candidates may apply for:

1) long visit ( from three months up to 12 months).

2) short visit (from 10 days minimum period up to 3 months).

The period of activity of long visits may be discontinuous based on the courses requirements and research plan. Short visits of 10 days cannot be divided and the presence of the visiting professor at UNICA must be continuous.

The program is sponsored by Regione Autonoma della Sardegna (RAS); decision n 56/21 29.12.2009 by RAS must be respected. The selection  will foster  long visits.

Allocation of resources:

60% will be assigned to long visits.

37% will be assigned to short visits.

3% for programs’ management.

How to apply, deadlines.

Candidate may file e-applications through the webpage http://people.unica.it/visitingprofessor/  starting from April 21st 2010 until May 4th 2010 (2:00 p.m. Central European Summer Time, GMT+2:00).

Applicants may apply only for one position/profile. In case of multiple candidatures by the same applicant only the last application form received will be taken into consideration. All applications must be strictly linked to one of the projects/profiles (research projects and/or courses proposals) available at http://people.unica.it/visitingprofessor/; candidates will report the profile code in the application form.

If the applicant is already in contact with a UNICA colleague, he/she can report the name in the application form.

In order to complete the application procedure the following documents have to be attached

  • Curriculum Vitae of the candidate and list of publications (MAX 1 MB size, available format .doc, PDF)
  • Two letters of recommendation

The above documents must be uploaded and sent simultaneously along with the application form.

Documents sent separately by e-mail to any of UNICA e-mail addresses will not take into consideration. At the end of the application procedure, an automated confirmation e-mail message will be sent to the e-mail address reported in the application form.

Incomplete forms, or forms with corrupted or wrong format files will be dismissed; the office will not alert candidates.

Evaluation and nomination

Applications will be first evaluated by UNICA Departments/Faculties panels depending on the applications profile selected by the candidate. The panel will formulate a shortlist and send it through UNICA  International Relations Office to the Academic Boards. The Academic Senate’s decision is final. The budget assigned to the candidates will be decided by the Academic Senate and approved by the Board of Directors.
The following criteria will be used by the Academic Senate of UNICA  to evaluate and approve the applications:

  • curriculum vitae of the candidate and list of publications
  • benefits for UNICA
  • ranking of the candidate’s University affiliations ( Times Higher Education 2009)
  • two letters of recommendation

Candidates cannot start their activities in UNICA before the approval of Academic Boards. After the Senate decision, candidates selected will be requested to present to the international relations office an authorization by the home University/research centre stating that  the candidate can take up the appointment assigned by UNICA.

Award

Appointed Visiting Fellows will be notified by e-mail, receiving an invitation letter. Appointed Visiting Fellows are requested to inform by e-mail the International Relations Office whether they are able to accept the nomination within 10 days from receiving official notice of their election. Upon allocation of the award,  each Visiting Fellow will be formally linked to a UNICA colleague sponsor. Visits of non-EU citizens must be planned far well in advance due to visa request procedure. The Visiting Program 2010 must be completed by July 31st 2011 (financial statement included) (RAS decision n 56/21).

Salary Information

The following  conditions  will be applied:

1) For visits longer than 15 days: remuneration is set to a sliding scale commensurate with the candidate’s academic qualifications and teaching/work experience.

A) € 7.157,86 monthly (gross income) for a visiting appointees comparable to a Full Professor (in the Italian academic system)

B) € 5.569,12 monthly (gross income) for a visiting appointees comparable to an Associate Professor (in the Italian academic system)

C) € 3.980,39  monthly (gross income) for a visiting appointees comparable to a researcher (in the Italian academic system)

The salary reported is a gross income including taxes charged to the Visiting Professor  by Italian law (INPS, INAIL). Any expenditures and expenses connected with his/her occupations/work at UNICA are covered with this sum; therefore  Visiting Professor  is not to receive any further sums as replacement for travelling and substinence expenses.

The due payment is to be reduced proportionately based on the length of stay or if the work has not been carried out entirely until the end of the period of time reported in the contract.

2) For visit of 15 days or less (minimum 10 continuous days):

  • € 228,57 (gross) daily allowance
  • coverage for travelling expenses is provided according to the following criteria:

-€ 600 for Visiting Professor coming from a European  Country

-€ 1200,00 for Visiting Professor coming from non-European Country.

Documentary evidence of expenditure (e.g. air ticket) would be needed for reimbursement of these expenses.

The amounts are lump sum  and subject to taxes by Italian law.

Appointed Visiting Fellows will sign a self-employment contract as consultants with UNICA which clearly reports salaries conditions. Contract signature and  beginning of activity in UNICA must  coincide.

Payments

The visiting professor is to receive  monthly  payments according to the length of the appointment. For long and short (from more than 15 days up  to 3 months length)  visits, the first payment will be accredited at the end of the first month (on the 27th of the month) of their UNICA appointment.

For short visits (shorter than 1 month) the  payment will be accredited at the end of the activity.

Taxes

As for Italian law,   incomes will be taxed by 30% (IRPEF, ex art.24, co.1-ter  del D.P.R 600/1973). Taking advantage of the tax treaty to avoid double taxation, Visiting Fellow may file in application for reimbursement available at the web site: www.finanze.it. Upon request, UNICA administration office will provide a declaration of payment.

Duties and  activities in UNICA

Appointed Visiting Professors are requested to inform by e-mail the International Relations Office (visitingprofessor@unica.it) whether they are able to accept the fellowship within 10 days from receiving official notice of their election.

During their staying in Cagliari, Fellows must go to UNICA International Relations Office and to  UNICA legal office and financial office  to arrange their position.

Visiting Professors are requested to confirm arrival and departure dates to/from Cagliari at least 30 days in advance to the International relation Office

The  period approved to the Visiting Professor must be spent entirely in UNICA. Visiting Fellows are kindly invited not to leave their residence in Cagliari without a previous agreement with UNICA International Relations Office. Any change to the initial stay plan  must be agreed with the UNICa hosting Faculty/Department and with the International Relation Office.

Visiting Fellows are encouraged to participate to any UNICA activity organized during their stay.

At the end of the visit a final report on the activities carried out during their fellowship must be submitted by the Visiting Professor and by the UNICA department/school/Faculty to which the appointee is attached. The report may be sent electronically to the International Relation Office.

Every opportunity should be taken to ensure that, where appropriate, publications result from the visit.

Once the award will be conferred, all the activities of the nominee must be approved by UNICA Faculties, Departments, PhD Schools.  The approval decision must be sent to the International Relations office.

Data Protection

All personal information given by the candidates during the application process will be treated according to the principles of data protection reported in the Decreto Legislativo 30.06.2003 n.196.
