Performance and quality in GPU-accelerated neural simulation
Short Abstract
Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) provide an opportunity for “desktop supercomputing”, enabling more ambitious simulation driven by more complex software. However, this opportunity comes with challenges: long learning curves to take advantage of idiosyncratic, heterogenous hardware and decreased confidence in the quality of simulation results. This paper describes techniques for addressing these challenges in the context of BrainGrid+Workbench, a new neural simulation and software/data provenance framework that reduces the difficulty of taking full advantage of GPU computing and increases investigator confidence that simulations results are valid.
Short Bio

Dr. Michael Stiber is Professor and Associate Dean at the Computing & Software Systems Division of the School of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), University of Washington Bothell (UWB, USA).
He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from UCLA in 1992. Before UWB, he was Assistant Professor at the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology and a Research Assistant Professor at the University of California, Berkeley. He has been also visiting Professor at the University of Florida and the Institute of Physiology of the Czech Academy of Sciences.
His research interests include: computational (neuro)science, scientific data visualization and management, neural networks and complex systems.
