John Finlay

John Finlay joined the School of Law of the University of Glasgow in 1998 and has taught in a wide range of areas of private law. He has been an Adviser of Studies since 2000 and Chief Adviser of Studies in Law since 2006. His research specialism is legal history and he has a particular interest in the history of the legal professions of Europe and the Americas. He has published widely and presented a number of papers in this field. At Honours level, he teaches both European Legal History and the History of Scots Law.

Leading on from his research interests, Dr Finlay has served as Honorary Publication Secretary to the Scottish History Society, on the Council of the Stair Society and for five years I was Secretary and Treasurer of the Scottish Legal History Group. I am a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and also of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland.
